The Importance of keeping your Exhaust system healthy

Exhausts are one of those car components that people tend to not want to think about, for many people this is merely a way to keep their car quiet and they do not take into account how important a healthy exhaust system truly is. It is the important function of the exhaust system to discharge waste from the engine in such a way as to keep the engine running properly. Damage to your exhaust can compromise not only your engine it can also compromise your health and safety since it can let potentially allow the release of deadly emissions that can make you sick and leave you at risk of an accident.

Exhausts have three important jobs, starting with removing wastes from the engine allowing it to continue running properly without the presence of wastes that can cause it run poorly or not at all. A properly installed and working exhaust system is designed to allow wastes to exit the engine quickly and efficiently, if the exhaust system breaks down this waste can choke the engine and cause it to lose power or break down completely.

Exhausts also reduce the noise made by the engine; this is also a waste result of a running engine, caused by waste products leaving the engine under very high pressure. When allowed to escape out of the engine directly and unhindered the sounds that these wastes make are very loud and can be distracting. The muffler is specifically designed to muffle these noises thus reducing or eliminating the sound these escaping wastes make.

Finally it is the job of exhausts to filter and clean the emissions that come from your car. These emissions are very harmful to the environment and in many places in the world laws have been passed limiting the amount of emissions coming from your car as an attempt to drastically reduce emission made by cars worldwide. The burning fuel produces gases that can pollute the air and contribute to global warming. The catalytic converter has the job of cleaning up these gases by breaking down the gas compounds, making them less harmful to the environment.

You can help keep your exhaust system healthy by inspecting it frequently or taking it into a shop to have it inspected. Exhausts that are too noisy, producing too many emissions, or making your engine run poorly should be checked to see of one or more components in their system should be replaced. Often times only one or two pieces will need replacing but even those pieces can create havoc with how well your car runs.

Most exhausts will need to be worked on by a professional that understands how an exhaust system works. There is special equipment that is often needed when fixing or replacing exhausts such as welding torches or pipe benders, this is not equipment that the average person has access to. A professional can also hook your exhaust up to a system to make sure there are no air leaks and that your engine is running optimally.
