The Art of Balancing Tyres (Wheel Balancing)

Balancing the tyres or wheel balancing (as it is commonly known as these days) is an important as well as an essential factor that must be considered by all the drivers. Improper alignment of the tyre will open up a new can of worms for the driver – it is better to check the wheels regularly for balancing problems. Since the procedure cannot be conducted without the aid of a third party agency, it makes sense to opt for the expertise of trained personnel to get the wheels balanced appropriately. An insight into some of the common technologies that are employed in the niche will also be discussed, likewise.

These days, one might come across computerized balancing of the tyres. What are the side effects that will be experienced by the driver when the wheels are not properly balanced? For starters, he or she will notice that the vehicle is pulling towards a side (either right or left). The same can be tested in your vehicle also. The next time you pass a straight stretch; do not place your hands on the steering wheel. Two scenarios might crop up

(a) the vehicle will continue to move in the straight line and

(b) the vehicle will move to one side.

If you experience (b), the tyres must be aligned immediately. Uneven wear and tear will be the result of misaligned wheels. The wear and tear might occur on the wheels as well as on the associated vehicle machinery like the suspension and the steering assembly. One might not realize the after effects of neglecting the simple procedure of wheel balancing, until they meet with an untimely accident. At times of need, the vehicle might not respond in an appropriate manner and the driver will lose control over the same.

Previously, the author had mentioned automated alignment procedures that are commonly executed all over the country. The vehicle will be placed on an appropriate platform and a computerized mechanism will be used to determine the percentage of alignment deviation of the tyres. Once the machinery calculates this percentage, the wheels will be affixed with special weights. Normally, these weights are fixed on to the rims of the wheels. The wheels will be checked once again for alignment problems – once the process is completed, the driver will be able to realize a smoother ride.

Insist on balancing the wheels when you give the vehicle for servicing procedures. Sometimes, the ordeal will be conducted freely. Most of the agencies that sell tyres will execute the same process freely when you purchase newer products from them. Do not consider lightly about the process, it could cost you your life if neglected. Besides, you will have to spend considerable amounts trying to fix problems with the steering assembly and the suspension systems, not to mention the costs associated with the purchase of newer tyres for the vehicle. Uneven wear and tear of the wheels can hamper the braking power of the vehicle significantly.
